National Human Rights Commission Vice Chair Wang Yu-ling received a Luxembourg parliamentary delegation April 8 in Taipei City. A variety of issues including human rights development, juvenile delinquency, migrant worker problems and abolition of the death penalty were discussed.
The delegation was led by Stéphanie Weydert, member of the Chamber of Deputies. Fellow legislators Ben Polidori, Liz Braz and Ricardo Marques were part of the delegation.
Wang said that Taiwan and Luxembourg share universal values of democracy and freedom and added that according to the U.S.-based non-governmental organization Freedom House 2025 Freedom in the World report Luxembourg scored 97 points while Taiwan had 94. She hoped to work together with the country to contribute to the advancement of global democracy.
Weydert said that Luxembourg values democracy and freedom as the country was once occupied during World War Two. She also lauded advancement of human rights in Taiwan and anticipated enhanced cooperation and partnership.
While noting that human trafficking and juvenile delinquency are major challenges faced by Luxembourg, delegates voiced concern over progress on abolition of the death penalty in Taiwan.
The NHRC said that while abolition of capital punishment is a long-held goal, no consensus has yet been reached and more dialogue needs to be held.
Wang concluded by anticipating further exchange with Luxembourg over human rights, the commission added. (POC-E)
